Influence, Credibility & Relationships

Serving on a board is a privilege and a responsibility. It’s about more than governance and oversight—it’s about influence, relationships, and the ability to add meaningful value. Whether you’re an experienced director or just starting your board journey, these three principles can help you stand out, build credibility, and expand your impact.

1️⃣ Be Repeatable, Not Predictable

Great board members are clear and consistent in their contributions. The key? Develop a natural, repeatable way of articulating your insights rather than scripting every word. It’s harder to remember what you’re "supposed" to say than what you naturally believe and say often. A strong personal brand in the boardroom comes from showing up with clarity and conviction—without being rigid or rehearsed.

2️⃣ Ask Those Who Know You Best

Board service isn’t just about what you bring to the table—it’s also about how others experience you in the room. Get in the habit of asking for feedback from fellow directors. How do you come across? What’s your impact? This not only strengthens your presence but also builds trust. And remember, when it comes to landing new board opportunities, introductions from those who have served with you matter far more than any "beauty contest" application process.

3️⃣ Network Your Network

More isn’t always better. The true power of a network isn’t in its size but in how well it functions. Ask yourself: how can you be a connector within your existing network? Who needs to meet whom? When you become known as someone who facilitates meaningful connections, you deepen relationships, create opportunities, and increase your own visibility in the right circles.

Bottom line: Board work is about influence, credibility, and relationships. Stay intentional in how you show up, seek feedback from those who matter, and focus on building a network that thrives on genuine connections.
